I guess that the story’s main ideas are admiration to the past and dissatisfaction to the present conditions. Because Charley, who is main character and a mental patient, said that he just wanted to escape reality. the fact that he went back to the present world despite finding the past and new world shows that he might just want to live a happy life with his wife and restart.
